A reaction is preformed in aqueous solution, and the temperature of the solution increases by 15.78 degrees celcius. Is the reaction exothermic or endothermic?

If the reaction was preformed in 100.00mL of water, how many joules of heat were trasferred in the reaction? The specific head of water is 4.184J/g degrees celcius.

If the same reaction were preformed under indentical conditions EXCEPT that ethanol was used as the solvent instead of water, would you expect to see the same amount of temp. change? Why or why not? (Assume that the ethanol does not produce any competing reactions).

Solution

Temperature of the solution increases hence the reaction is exothermic reaction as it must be liberating heat which is causing the temperature to rise.


100 mL of water = 100 g of water

Hence

Heat Transfered = 100 * 4.184 * 15.78 = 6602.352 J = 6.602 kJ


The temperature change would be different because of the different specific heat of water.
