Solution
Answer to question d :
Time it will take to produce 200 units when the process starts empty
= Amount of time it will take for the first bottle to go through all 3 processes and come out of the system + Cycle time of the system ( seconds per bottle) x 199 units
Since bottleneck process is the “Resource 1” with cycle time of 6 minutes/ unit , it decides the amount of time each unit has to spend at each resource ( processing + idle time ) .
Thus amount of time first unit has to spend at each of 3 resources = 6 minutes
Therefore , amount of time first unit will take to come out of the system = 6 x 3 = 18 minutes
Also, overall cycle time of the system ( as decided by cycle time of the bottleneck process ) = 6 minutes/ unit
Therefore , amount of time taken for 499 bottles to come out of the system = 6 minutes/ unit x 199 units = 1194 minutes
Therefore,
Time it will take to produce 200 units when the process starts empty
= Amount of time it will take for the first unit to go through all 3 processes and come out of the system + Amount of time taken for 199 units to come out of the system
= 18 + 1194 minutes
= 1212 minutes
IT WILL TAKE 1212 MINUTES FOR THE PROCESS TO PRODUCE 200 UNITS STARTING WITH AN EMPTY SYSTEM
