1 The different methods of graphing a line How do you do it

1. The different methods of graphing a line. How do you do it? Do you find the slope method easier than plotting points?

2. There are different ways of deciding if a relation is a function. Which do you find easiest? Can you give an example of a function from daily life or something that relates to your Business major?

Please answer questions with two detailed paragraphs each for a total of four paragraphs.

Solution

1)

Yes, I find the slope method easier than plotting point. Each of the methods and the way to perform them are listed below.

1) slope - intercept: start at the y-intercept, then use the slope\'s rise over run to get a few more points and you\'ve got the line.
#2) make a table of ordered pairs, putting in values for x, finding y, then plot the points to get the line.
#3) find the intercepts: let x=0 to find y-intercept and let y=0 to find the x-intercept. Plot the two intercepts and draw the line through them.

2)

Function:  A function is a set of ordered pairs in which each x-element has only ONE y-element associated with it. If a domain value (x) only maps to one range value (y), then the relation is a function. Notice that two domain values can map to the same range value and the relation is still a function. This is often a source of confusion.

An  easy and fast way of solving these types of problems. :

To see if the relation is a function then check if the in all the coordinates are the same or different.
If there are any similar numbers for the then that relation is not a function.
If there are no similar numbers for the then that relation is a function
