please provide an example of a constraint one from the text

please provide an example of a constraint (one from the text or one of your own creation). Then explain what the RHS value means, being sure to explain where it came from and why it might be subject to change.

Solution

Constraints are restrictions or limitations imposed on a problem.

Take an example of Par Inc, is a manufacturer of golf equipment and suppliers whose management has decided to move into the market for medium and high priced golf bags.Par\'s distributor is enthusiastic about the new product line and has agreed to buy all the golf bags Par produces over the next three months. Manuacturing of a golf bag, following operations are requires:

1. Cutting and dying of the material

2. Sewing

3. Finishing

4. Inspection and packaging

The director of manufacturing identified production time and maximum available time for each of these operations as under:

The objective of Par, Inc, is to generate maximum revenue by producing no. of standard and deluxe bags.

Here for this problem, there are four constraints relate to number of hours of manufacturing time available, they restrict the number of standard bags and number of deluxe bags that can be produced.

Constraint 1 : No.of hours of cutting and dying time used must be less than or equal to the no.of hours of cutting and dying time available.

Constraint 2 : No.of hours of sewing time used must be less than or equal to the no.of sewing time available.

Constraint 3 : No. of hours of finishing time used must be less than or equal to the no.of hours of finishing time available.

Constraint 4 : No. of hours of inspection and packaging time used must be less than or equal to the no.os hrs. of inspection and packaging time available.

When you put these constraints in mathematical form, it becomes:

Constraint 1 : Total hours of cutting and dying time used maximum hours are available for cutting and dying

: 7/10 S + 1 D 630, where S= no.of standard bags and D = no. of deluxe bags

Constraint 2 : Hrs. of sewing time used maximum hrs are available for sewing

: 1/2 S + 5/6 D 600

Constraint 3 : Hrs. of finishing time used Maximum hrs available for finishing

1S + 2/3 D 708

Constraint 4: Hrs.of insepction & Packaging time used maximum hrs available for Inspection & packaging

: 1/10 S + 1/4 D 135.

As per management priorities and changes in the decision of producing no. of amount of standard bags and deluxe bags, these 4 constraints are subject to change. Moreover change in the availability of resources also leads to make changes in RHS ( Right hand side values , i.e . maximum available time ).

Production time (Hrs.) Production time (Hrs.) Maximum time available (Hrs.)
Department Standard bag ( S ) Deluxe bag (D)
Cutting & Dying 7/10 1 630
Sewing 1/2 5/6 600
Finishing 1 2/3 708
Inspection & Packaging 1/10 1/4 135
