Check all that apply that could potentially result in an increase in arterial blood pressure.
Vasoconstriction of arterioles
Increase in cardiac rate
Decrease in peripheral resistance
Increase in stroke volume
Solution
Vasoconstriction of arterioles will lead to increase in arterial blood pressure. This is more easy to understand if one were to imagine constricting the water hose by partially blocking the hose with the finger and observing the water pressure rise due to the constriction.
Increase in cardiac rate will not necessarily increase arterial blood pressure because, the healthy arteries will dilate to accommodate and allow more blood to flow.
Decrease in peripheral resistance will not increase arterial blood pressure. Peripheral resistance is function of the tone i.e. viscosity of blood and vascular hindrance i.e. diameter of the vessels and blood vessel musculature and is inversely proportional to the two factors. i.e. Decrease in viscosity and vasoconstriction will cause increase in peripheral resistance, which in turn will cause increase in arterial blood pressure.
Increase in stroke volume will cause increase in arterial blood pressure because of increase in cardiac output.
