74. The public library budgeted for fiction, nonfiction, and reference books as follows: Purchase 500 books each month at a total cost of $19,500 Purchase 50 more fiction than reference books The average cost of fiction books is $30, of non- fiction is $40, and of reference is $50. (a) Find the number of books the library should buy in each category (b) Because the library cannot buy a negative number of books, use the solution to find the maximum and minimum number in each category

Solution

Let x, y , z represent the number of books purchased in order

( x= no of fiction books , y= no of non fiction , z= no of reference books)

then x+y+z+ 500 -----(1)

cost eqn : 30x+ 40 y+50z= 19500 dividing by 10

3x+4y5z= 1950 -----(2)

and the third eqn is x-z=50 -----(3)

substituting x= z+50 in eeqn 1 and we get

y+2z= 450 and we know that x= z+50

the system has many integral solution

One such solution is : x= 200 , y= 150 , x=150
