Report the maximum temperature to the nearest tenth of a degree. Show algebraic work.

(b) Use the quadratic polynomial to estimate the outdoor temperature at 7:30 am, to the nearest tenth of a degree. (work optional)

(c) Use the quadratic polynomial y = 0.3476t2 + 10.948t 6.0778 together with algebra to estimate the time(s) of day when the outdoor temperature y was 72 degrees. That is, solve the quadratic equation 72 = 0.3476t2 + 10.948t 6.0778 . Show algebraic work in solving. State your results clearly; report the time(s) to the nearest quarter hour.

a) maximum temperature occurs at t = -b/2a

b = 10.948 , a = -.3476

t = -10.948 / 2*(-.3476) = 15.7479

therefore, maximum temperature occured at 15.75 hours = 3 : 45 pm

maximum temperature = y = - .3476(15.7479)^2 + 10.948(15.7479) - 6.0778 = 80.127 = 80.10 degree

b) temperature at 7:30 am

y = -.3476(7.30)^2 + 10.948(7.30 ) - 6.0778 = 55.32 degrees

c) 72 = -.3476t^2 +10.948t - 6.0778
