Hydrolysis of an Aromatic Ester - Pre Lab Questions These questions are due at the beginning of the period 1. What is the term used for the hydrolysis of an acid with a base? 2. How will the acid prepared in this experiment be identified?

Solution

1. The hydrolysis of an ester with a base is known as saponification reaction. Though hydrolysis of an ester can be done even in acidic medium but in the basic medium, the reaction is more faster.

2. The end products of hydrolysis of an ester with base are carboxylate salt and an alcohol from which it was formed initially.

The alcohol can be separated from the product mixture by distillation. The left carboxylate salt is neutralized by doing acidic work up so that the anion gets neutralized and forms the acid. The resulting acid solution can be identified by taking its boiling point through distillation.
