A textbook of mass 1.20 kg accelerates at 1.50 m/s2 as it is pulled by a string along a horizontal surface. The sliding kinetic friction force on the book is 2.40 N. What tension is applied on the string?

Solution

Net force = ma = 1.2*1.5 = 1.8N

net force = sum of all forces

so

1.8 = T-2.4

T=2.4+1.8=4.2N
