What is the force required to punch a square hole 60 mm on each side in a 1 mm thick 5052-o aluminum sheet using flat dies?
If the available presses are of 800 KN capacity, calcualate the maximum number of slugs that can be punched simultaneously with the available press.
Solution
Force for 5052o aluminum steel is
F = 0.7TL(UTS)
For theis case L = 240 mm = 0.24 m, T = 1 mm= 0.001 m and UTS is 190 MPa for 5052-O aluminum (taken from properties of 5052-O table)
F = 0.7(0.001)(0.24)(190*106)
F = 31.9 kN
If the dies were beveled the force would be much lower and would approach zero using very sharp bevel angles.
b) Maximum no of slugs = Available force/F
= 800kN/31.9
Max no.of slugs = 25
