Consider the equation Work Paymoney Survival or better Thi

Consider the equation: Work = Pay/money = Survival (or better) This transformation was, Che believed, an essential part of the movement toward the New Man/New Society. As part of this process, he believed very strongly in the vital role of voluntary – unpaid - work. He himself worked in the evenings and on weekends on construction projects and harvesting sugarcane. 1) Summarize Che’s arguments a) in favor of voluntary work and b) his ideas about wages. 2) What do you think of his arguments? (NOT what do you think about Cuba, about socialism in general or any other topics which are interesting but not the point of the assignment).

Solution

1) Summarize Che’s arguments a) in favor of voluntary work and

Che\'s arguments in favour of voluntary work was that it was essential for the state in order to maintain a productive output of products and services. Since almost all of the means of production were seized and nationalised, it was important to ensure that they function productively. From his point of view since the citizens would benefit under his Marxist - Leninist state. His economy was a socialist communist economy where the means of production were seized and citizens needed permits to run small businesses and establishments and the wages were set by the government. However. the state would also provide health care and other benefits,

b) his ideas about wages.

Hi idea about wages was that they should be universal and more or less equal. His formed a state which in theory tried to ensure appropriation of the workers and surplus value for the masses and the state and took a firm stand against capitalism. Since the entire state had a monopoly on production, they had a monopoly on employment too. This allowed them to control wages in almost every industry especially agricultural wages. He believed that a wage surplus wasn\'t necessary since the state would be the provider of benefits to it\'s citizens. He believed in controlling the unions to ensure that high wage demands did not arise. In fact he wanted to completely eliminate money and replace it with a barter exchange for goods and services.

2) What do you think of his arguments? (NOT what do you think about Cuba, about socialism in general or any other topics which are interesting but not the point of the assignment).

I think that his arguments were good in theory and what reinforced his ideology was the degree of poverty in Latin American Countries. He\'s arguments were backed with good intentions since there was he viewed the western countries a indifferent to the economic state of the Latin America and firmly believed that the Latin American countries were being exploited for their vast resources. But like i said they were noble and altruistic in theory but in practice, the nationalisation of industries ,seizing the means of production, controlling wages and businesses removed all incentives to create valuable products and services in the country which eventually resulted in a a broken economy.
