This question needs an assessment of the impacts that the ideological conflict between American-style Democracy &   Communism had on the pulling out of the colonial nations from South-eastern Asia & the safeguarding of the sovereignty of the new states. The Cold War speeded up the process of decolonization in few of the colonies however hindered it in others. It also delayed decolonization by getting in foreign intervention in the area post independence. But, decolonization wasn’t always chiefly impacted by the Cold War. In few of the colonies, other determinants like the interaction between the colonial nations & the nationalists played an important part . In light of these influences, how the Cold War impacted the process of decolonization was contingent on the nature of nationalist actions in every colony & on the concerns of the superpowers.

The Cold War fast-tracked the process of decolonization in colonies wherein Communism was being repressed , outcoming in favour from America which was anti-communist. Indonesia advantaged greatly from Sukarno’s democratic stance.

Conversely, the Cold War inhibited the process of decolonization in colonies wherein Communism was producing a big impact on the colony, outcoming in the Western nations stepping in so as to block the communist forces, thus, pushing back teh process of independence
