You are choosing between two different cell phone plans. The first plan charges a rate of 24 cents per minute. The second plan charges a monthly fee of $44.95 plus 12 cents per minute. How many minutes would you have to use in a month in order for the second plan to be preferable? Round up to the nearest whole minute.
Solution
first plan equation is
y = .24 x
where y is the cost and x is the number of minutes
writing equation of 2 plan
y = 0.12x + 44.95
for 2nd plan to be more preferable cost of second plan must be less than cost of 1st plan
0.12x + 44.95 < .24x
subtracting .12 x from both sides
44.95 < .12 x
x > 374.583
x > 375
therefore , second plan is more preferable if you use more than 375 minutes
