Does union diversification make unions stronger or weaker Ho

Does union diversification make unions stronger or weaker? How would you feel as an auto worker to see the UAW representing employees outside the auto industry?

Solution

It would depend of the diversification.

Let’s use the UAW for the example, this union we could said that has been already diversify, since it was created for the automobile industry, and over the years it has involved with another industries, like the aerospace and agricultural. But has been done on select industries that worked on the same way.

So this is an example of a union that has become stronger for the diversification. But not all the cases can work out like this one, there has to be certain conditions so the union gets stronger and no the other way. Because if there is no planning and there is no selection of what to represent and the core of the union the credibility of is could colapse.

And about the UAW representing employees outside the auto industry, like I said, if they represent people of the aerospace industry or any related industry I would feel that they are capable of handling different industries base on their knowledge. But if they were industries of sector completely different, I would wonder, how specialised they are on the matter.
