Explain the difference between a brittle and a ductile mater

Explain the difference between a brittle and a ductile material. Give examples. An elastomeric bearing with thickness a = 1 in., length b = 10 in., and width c = 8 in. supports a beam with a maximum lateral load P = 5 kips. The maximum displacement cannot exceed delta = 0.4 in. Determine: Modulus of rigidity G Shearing stress tau.

Solution

Brittle Material-

It is type of material which generally breaks without significant deformation (strain).

In this type of material ,there is no plastic region in stress-strain curve.

Example- Cast iron, Glass, Concrete etc.

Ductile Material-

It is a property of material by which it can deform into thin cross-sectional wire.

Example- Mild steel, Aluminium, Cupper, Silver, Gold etc.
