Texas is the second largest state in the USA by geographic area. Texas is associated with several climatic regions and a variety different landscapes. It includes coastal regions, grasslands, forests, desert and swamps and hills. Texas has 15 important rivers and many smaller water bodies. The Rio Grande river is the largest.

Texas with its large grasslands had a great potential for cultivation. Texas\' large gulf coastline provided for the production of salt. Abundant water, lumber from its forests, gold, silver and the discovery of oil in the early 20th century made Texas an attractive settlement. Its climate to was pleasant and had very few land area that faced extreme weather. Early European settlers were attracted to the region because of vast grasslands and livestock. Indigenous tribes who were present earlier in small settlements taught the Europeans and the Spaniards their way of cultivation and hunting.
Availability of different types of soil, climatic regions, and geographical landscape with variety of abundant resources contributed to the economy and growth of civilizations that landed there. Hence, it is due to the climate and geography that settlers chose to stay in Texas.
