In a California town the monthly charge for waste collectio
. In a California town, the monthly charge for waste collection is $8 for 32 gallons of waste and $12.32 for 68 gallons of waste.
(a) Find a linear formula for the cost, C, of waste collection as a function of the number of gallons of waste, w.
(b) What is the slope of the line found in part (a)? Give units and interpret your answer in terms of the cost of waste collection.
(c) What is the vertical intercept of the line found in part (a)? Give units and interpret your answer in terms of the cost of waste collection.
Solution
the monthly charge for waste collection is $8 for 32 gallons of waste and $12.32 for 68 gallons of waste
therefore
C= 8 when w = 32
C= 12.32 when w = 68
(a) therefore using two points form
C-8 / (w-32) = (12.32-8) / ( 68-32)
C-8 = 0.12w -3.84
C = 0.12w + 4.16
linear formula for the cost, C, of waste collection as a function of the number of gallons of waste, w.
(b) comparing with y = mx +C
where m = slope = 0.12
since slope is posiytive it means cost / gallons is increases with increament in gallon of water
(c) Plux w = 0
C = 4.16
it means initial cost of waste collection set before it started was 4.16
