On Homework 1 Derrick built a pen for his dog using one side
On Homework 1, Derrick built a pen for his dog using one side of his house. This time he has 16 feet of fencing to use for the three sides of his fence. Make a table that uses the distance d away from the house as input and the length of the side opposite the house and area as outputs. Have at least 5 lines in your table. Write as expression for the length of the side opposite the house in terms of 4.

Solution
(a) The pen for the dog will be fenced on 3 sides only, as Derrick’s house is the 4th side. The total length of the fencing available for the fencing of the pen is 16ft. Thus, if d is the distance from the house, and l is the length of the fence, then 2d +l = 16. The required table is as under:
Distance (d)
ft.
Length (l)
Ft.
Area(A)

(b) The length l, opposite the house = 16 -2d.
| Distance (d) ft. | Length (l) Ft. | Area(A) Sq. ft. |
| 1 | 14 | 14 |
| 2 | 12 | 24 |
| 3 | 10 | 30 |
| 4 | 8 | 32 |
| 5 | 6 | 30 |
