You have just been assigned as your organization’s training manager and must conduct a new needs assessment for a new project. Describe the method you would use.

Solution

As the organization’s training manager I would not rely on the single method to identify the needs for training. I will use multiple methods to make sure that the training needs identified by one method are the ones identified by other methods. Different methods of needs assessment are observing the employees who are working at the job. As a training manager initially I will start to identify what types of technical expertise are needed to start the project and to achieve the goals and objectives of the project. The problem I identified was that the level of instructional expertise varied. Some had no experience, while others had very less experience. The project needs the highly experienced and skilled technicians. After identifying this information will be collected by observing the SME’s performance and try to identify the training gap which is present between knowledge skills and abilities which are needed to do new project. After observing the gap I will conduct focus groups with SME’s and ask about what they think is needed before we can start a new project. Utilizing online technologies and reading technical manuals will further add what other gaps and training programs are needed. I will try to link whether the training programs listed will help to achieve the project objectives. I will also study what trainings were given to employees in past on projects like this.
