Two planes travel toward each other from cities that are about 1220km apart at rates of 320km/hr and 290km/hr. They started at the same time.

In how many hours will they meet?

Solution

Let x be the number of hours in which the 2 planes meet. In x hours, the plane travelling at the rate of 320 km/hr would travel 320x km and the plane travelling at the rate of 290 km/hr would travel 290x km. Therefore, 320x +290x = 1220 or, 610x = 1220 so that x = 1220/610 = 2 hours. Thus, the 2 planes will meet in 2 hours.
