Please explain Im reading my textbook and Im just confused o

Please explain. I\'m reading my textbook, and I\'m just confused on how to do the factor theorem.

Use the factor theorem to determine if (x-4) is a factor of f(x) = 4x^5 - 3x^3 + 2x^2 - 5x + 8

Solution

if (x-a) is a ffactor of f(x) then f(a) comes out to be ZERO f(4) = 4(4)^5 - 3(4)^3 + 2(4)^2 - 20 + 8 : 852 so it is not a factor (x-4) is not a facto of f(x)
