Solution

The simplest processors are scalar processors. Each instruction executed by a scalar processor typically manipulates one or two data items at a time.

A superscalar architecture has multiple execution units within cpu. Each Unit can process separate data items concurrently. Hence multiple units such as instruction fetch unit, instruction decode unit, instruction execution unit and store unit can operate simultaneously at a time by executing independent instructions. Different CPUs are designed in such a way to have 3-stage, 4-stage or 5-stage parallelism depends on the independent units available within the CPU.
