1 Describe what an enzyme is composed ofand what it does dur
Solution
Answer 1:
Most enzymes are made up with
1) Protein part
2) Non-protein part(cofactors)
Enzyme(generally globular proteins) is a catalyst, speeds up a reaction, but isn’t consumed by it.
It has active binding site - binds and orient substrates
Catalytic site- Reduce chemical activation energy
Enzyme structures may also contain allosteric sites where the binding of a small molecule causes a conformational change that increases or decreases activity.
Mechanism of action of enzyme:
1) Lock and key model- Enzyme and substrate fits in complementary geometric shapes.
2) Induced fit model- Enzyme active sites are changing its structure to fit into the substrate.
Answer 2:
Statins inhibits HMG-CoA reductase activity(enzyme cholesterol biosynthesis) and thus used as lipid lowering medication.
Statins are build to be similar to substrate so that they can dock at the active site and block the enzyme for making cholesterol in the liver.Statins fit in enzyme\'s active site and compete with the native substrate. So by competitive inhibition this activity takes palce.
