Solution

Ben walks along a path at 4 mph. His sister Amanda starts jogging after one and a half hours on the same path at 8.5 mph . Let x be the number of hours, after Amanda starts, when Ben and Amanda meet. In x + 1.5 hrs, Ben would walk 4(x +1.5) = 4x +6 miles, and in x hours, Amanda would jogg a distance of 8.5x miles. Therefore, 4x +6 = 8.5x or, 8.5x - 4x = 6 or, 4.5 x = 6 so that x = 6/4.5 = 1.33 hrs ( on rounding off to the nearest hundredth).
