Solution
9/11 made a strong impact on US and intern affecting its foreign policy. 17 years after the attack of 9/11, there is still war between US and Afghanistan. US now has increased its intervention in foreign wars with troops placed even in Iraq. Spending on defence and war solutions increased drastically compared to the time before the terrorist attacks. Terrorism became the focus of the American Foreign Policy immediately after the strikes and the countries who were identified to be part of terrorism were considered US enemies. Popularly known as Bush Doctrine, US went into a mode of preventive action from the earlier focus of preemptive action. NGOs were scrutinised to ensure they meet the guidelines laid by U.S. anti-terrorism policy. Though the controversial alliance with Pakistan continued and was questioned from time to time.
Globalisation was looked in a positive light before the terrorist attack happened ion 9/11. Post 9/11, people realised the negative side of the ease of communication, travel and trade that globalisation brings, it was realised that with free trade comes easy transfer of drugs, the population of refugees and illegal immigrants increased and there was a sharp rise in the diseases like HIV/AIDS impacting the economy financially and with all this came easy way of communication and entrance for the terrorists.
Though if we look at it from the broader perspective things didn’t change as much as they were expected to change. If we look at the future role now of US in international relations, people in the country has started questioning the reason and the extent of US involvement in the world and attaining a status of global leadership. Recession of 2008, wars of Iraq and Afghanistan make people question on why US has to play such a big role on the world stage. How further governments react to this questioning will determine the course of US in international relations.
