Describe, identify, and discuss the critical environmental elements that may influence leaders\' adaptability and success.
Solution
Adaptability is the ability of a leader to fit in various environments through the changes that occur in an organizational either internally or externally. There are three major elements that a leader should possess. First they need to possess the ability to motivate their staff, they should also be able to work in cross cultural environment. Lastly, they should be able to develop the appropriate measures to enhance ability to change (Martinuzzi, n.d.).
Looking at the ability to facilitate change, we find that leaders must be keen to observe the external environment, decode the changes, and reinvent the changes into the business model. In doing so, they will be able to leverage their capabilities in a timely manner which also by passes slow decision making hierarchies. A good example in the above elements regards Tesco Company. The company carries out detailed analyses with reference to the loyalty card customer who total to 13 million. They have made a study pattern continuous so as to enable them to customize their offerings according the needs of the customer. It enables leaders to create a framework that can adapt to the threats and opportunities.
The other elements that influence the success and adaptability is the leaders’ ability to work across culture. Globalization and technologies combined together have created a new set of trends to the CEOs. Robert Mc Donald who is the chief operating officer once said’ \"I did not expect to live outside the United States for 15 years; the world has changed, so I have had to change, too. When you look at my bio, foreign languages are not my best subjects. But, when you move out of your culture, you have to learn foreign languages (Martinuzzi, n.d.).”Leaders must be all round individual who can fit in any environment. Besides, in order to expand a company’s operations such as operating overseas and globally it’s inevitable to work cross culture (Martin Reeves, 2011). The readiness of a leader to be able to appreciate change makes the difference between leaders who are successful and those who are unsuccessful.
Finally, the third element constitute the ability to manage teams/employees. This is a leadership competency that should be adopted by all leaders. A leader cannot succeed alone, instead, there is need to work in collaborative efforts with his or her employees thus allowing achievement of the organizational goals. Leaders are also the pace setters. They set the example to their employees regarding values, considerations expected from their employees (Martinuzzi, n.d.).
Other factors include effective communication with the employees. Further, they have to promote the skills of the individuals using the proper training programs. They should cultivate the talent of their employees through motivation.
A manager who possess the above skills will respond positively to changing circumstances, lead the teams well and provide solutions to the existing problems.
