Solution
Both ion exchange chromatography and gel permeation chromatography can be used to separate proteins. In ion exchange chromatography, proteins are separated according to the affinity of charges on proteins to the solid supports. In gel permeation chromatography proteins are separated according to their size. Smaller proteins diffuse unto the gel beads and move slowly while larger protein molecules elute first.
