Consider an effective team that you have observed or participated in. Identify the characteristics that contributed to this team’s productivity. Use specific examples of what you have observed or experienced. Then, using concepts and theories from the textbook and/or other scholarly sources discuss the pros and the cons of the group’s work in a paper of 1-2 pages, APA format. What are two things you believe they did well? What are two areas where you feel they could improve?
Solution
Effective Team
A team is a group of people who work together to achieve specified objectives. The team comprises individuals with similar objectives. I was once in a team. The group was a research project group. We were so successful, and we were satisfied with the results. The success was characterized by the following;
Teamwork
It was comprised of four members who were active participants. We were so active, and each, and every one had duties which were to be attended to before the deadlines. Teamwork was key to the success of the group.
Time conscious
Managing time heavily contributed to the effectiveness and efficiency of the group. All the members always arrived on time and maximally utilized the available time.
Good Leadership
Everyone was a leader in the team. There was the team leader who supervised the group activities, the secretary who typed and wrote all articles, discipline master who punished members and treasurer who accounted for all the cash and created the budget.
Passion
All group participants were passionate in working for the group. This also was created by the competition brought about by many groups. We wanted to be through before the deadline.
Pros of group work
Brainstorming
A group of individuals will perform duties well than a single individual. This is because the partisans will have come up with different ideas and arguments.
Increased performance
Groups working together will achieve more than a person working on his/her own.
Skills development
An individual will develop interpersonal skills such turn-taking in speaking as well as leadership skills. This skills will only be acquired by such groups.
Realization of one\'s potential
Teaming up with other people helps one to identify their potential strengths and weaknesses. This enables one to work on the weaknesses and strengths to be a better person.
Cons of Group work
Competitive feeling rather than cooperative
Some groups lose their true objective of cooperating towards a similar objective and becomes hotbeds of competition
Conflicting schedules
Members may not be able to schedule their time together due to time constraints. This limits the productivity of the group and results in the waste of time.
Uncooperative members
Some members may not be active participants in the group. This also limits the success of the group due to lack of brainstorming.
Two things the group did well.
Teamwork
The group members gave everything they had for the success of the group.
Time cautious
The group was able to utilize its time well, and everybody always came and left the meetings on time
Two areas for improvement
Communication
The group was not good in timely communication of crucial information.
Lack of turn-taking while discussing
This results in making noise and wasting a lot of time. This also led to a group being a one-person show.
