How would you connect this to a network using fiber optic cable including the dumb terminals.? What kind of NIC would you need? Would you need specialized software? Would you use remote desktop services for the dumb terminals?
There is a mainframe in the main hospital that has 20 dumb terminals connected via coax cable.
Solution
In the dumb terminal system, there is only a computer screen and input devices like keyboard and mouse and some serial port is available.
So, we must need a remote desktop service as a backbone connection. It is better to use some Linux system for creating such kind of network because in this case, you don\'t need to install some silly software for configuration. All device driver and communication software are present in Linux and there are many available tools.
Software configurable NIC must be manually configured when it installed in the system, but contain a proprietary software program that allows the operator to configure the NIC via a menu, or choose the auto configuration mode that determines what configuration is most suitable. When you buy a NIC, the required software will provide by the manufacturer and also instructions for configuring it.
Generally, we need an Ethernet NIC for fibre optic connection.
There is a mainframe computer or system and the Dumb Terminal are connected to this computer through the optical fibre.
You can use NIC 1000Base-FX PCI 64/32 Bit PCI Fiber Adapter for it.
So at first create a local network through remote login where 20 Dumb Terminal are commected. I recomend to use Any Linux server version.
