CARLA LOMBARD ALWAYS WORKED WELL WITH people. So when she opened her Better Bagels bagel shop seven years ago, she anticipated that managing her employees would be the easy part. She had worked for enough different bosses that she thought she knew what it took to be a good employer. Whether she was up to the financial side of running a business was her worry. As it turned out, however, Better Bagels flourished. Not only did Carla go on to open three smaller branches of Better Bagels, but her bakery also made daily wholesale deliveries to dozens of coffee shops and restaurants around the city. No, the business was prospering. It was just that the personnel issues turned out to be more difficult than she had ever expected. Take this week, for example him next month to manager of one of the branch shops. After ordering a bagel, Frances took Carla aside. She beat around the bush for a few minutes before she got to her point, because she was there to tell Carla that Tom had AIDS. Frances said she was telling Carla because she \"always liked her and thought she was entitled to know because she was Tom\'s employer.\" Carla barely knew Frances, and she was so taken aback that she was at a loss for words. She was shocked and embarrassed and didn\'t know whether she should even discuss Tom with Frances. While Carla was still trying to recover herself, Frances took her bagel and left. Carla was still concerned and upset when she saw Tom the next day. Perhaps he had been thinner and looked tired On Tuesday, Carla was in the main bagel shop when around more often the last few months, Carla thought to herself. But noon Tom Walters\'s ex-wife, Frances, came in. Tom oversaw a lot she couldn\'t be sure, and Tom seemed to be his usual upbeat of the early-morning baking at that shop and like most of Carla\'s self. Carla wanted to discuss Frances\'s visit with Tom, but she employees put in his share of time working the sales counter. He couldn\'t bring herself to mention it. She had always liked Tom was a good worker, and Carla had been considering promoting but-face it, she thought-he\'s my employee, not my friendSolution
Answer:
The important ethical issue in the above business scenario is that the employer is exploring the option to terminate or fire the good employee from the business. The reason for this employee fire or termination is that Employee’s ex-wife update to the employer that the employee had AIDS. The business owner thinking that this employee’s disease may have other implications on the business in near future. So in order to avoid the business implications, the business owner is thinking option for the employee away from the business work place. The AIDS disease may have other business implications and it may impacts behavior of consumers/customers in the market for this business.
Though the employee is not suffering with AIDs and he is a good employee and performing well in the business. He is due a promotion in the near future. He is going to be selected as a manager for one of the branch office. But he is going to face an unethical action.
From ethics and workplace point of view, if the rumor of AIDS is being made in the market for the employee, then this needs to be managed well as it may have adverse impacts on the consumer/customer behavior and though process. If the customer/consumer came to know about this information, then it will have adverse impact as the disease AIDS is very sensitive information. The person with such disease cannot be at work place, though we know that it will not have impact on any other people, consumer, employee, but the general mindset of people is different. It is difficult to manage the mindset of people in the market.
From employer point of view, Employer rights for ethical actions is that the employer wants to have the work place free from any ethical issue or any issue which can have adverse impact on the business and its branding in the market. So the employer will plan to remove all such potential ethical issues which can have adverse impact on the business.
From employee point of view, since the employee is not have any fault and he is not having any AIDS disease, he would like to continue the job and he may raise the ethical grievance in the organization or may plan for legal action or sue against the employer. IF the employee is not on fault then employee will be eligible to work in the organization. He will be supported by the legal authorities.
