Light of wavelength 589 nm in passes through a piece of fuse

Light of wavelength 589 nm in passes through a piece of fused equarty (n = 1.458) a) Find the speed of light in the quarty b) what is the wavelength of this light in the fused quarty? c) what is the frequaency of this light in the fused quarty? A loser beam is incident at an angle of 30degree to the vertical into a solution of corn syrup in water If the beam is refracted at 19.24degree in the vertical a) what is the index of refraction of the solution? b) Suppose the light is red with wave length 632.8 nm in vacuum, find its wavelength, frequency and speed in the solution A loser evite a single, 3.0 ms pulse of light that has a frequency of 2.94 times 10^11 H and a hotal power of 65 Kw. How many photons are in the pulse?

Solution

a) v = c/n = (3 x 10^8)/(1.458)

v = 2.058 x 10^8 m/s

b) lambda = 589 / 1.458 = 403.98 nm OR 404 nm

c) f = v / lambda = 509433 Hz

-------------------

Using snell\'s law,

ni sini = nr sinr

1.33 * sin30 = n * sin19.24

n = 2.02

b) v = (3 x 10^8) / 2.02 = 1.49 x 10^8 m/s

lambda = 632.8 / 2.02 = 313.57 nm

f = v / lambda = 475173.2 Hz

------------------

energy of 1 pulse = Power x time

       = 65 x 10^3 x 3 x 10^-3 = 195 J

energy of single photon = h f = (6.626 x 10^-34 )(2.94 x 10^11)

          = 1.948 x 10^-22 J

no. of photons = 1 x 10^24 photons
