This week you have learned about process control. You have had the opportunity to learn about the various charts and statistical tools that can be used in order to control a process. Assume that you are a part of the quality assurance team for a pharmaceutical company that is about to release a new medication to control blood pressure. The quality assurance department is torn as to what method should be used in process control. Half of your department feel s-charts should be used and the other half of the department feel x-Bar charts should be used. Our discussion will be in the format of a debate this week. If your last name begins A-L, you will be for using x-Bar charts. If your last name begins M-Z, you will be for using s-Charts. Be sure to use your course materials and outside research to support your reply. My last name is Chestnut.

X bar (Process mean) charts are used more effectively for sample size, more than 10 and this is the case here.

The drug effect samples shall be collected from various hospitals, for 30 patients in the area every 2 hours for next 100 days.

The x bar charts shall be plotted for the process mean or the process average based on the process standard deviations and the control limits. The x-axis of the chart is time indicative.

The random scattering of the data points about the mean and remaining within the control limits, point to the facts that the drug is effective in fulfilling its purpose and the observations can be continued.

The control limits might be decided based on the s chart or might have been predetermined based on the research and expected on administration of this drug.

The quality control professionals shall ensure the data points do not go beyond the control limits and also in the observation if the control limits can be further narrowed safely.

Alternatively if the scatter of the points is very narrow on the two sides of the mean, the process can be reviewed to see the possibility of administering lesser quantity of drug still achieving the scatter of the sample points within the allowed control limits.

Any point going out of the control limit indicates the process has to be reconfirmed and adjusted to ensure it does not repeat.
