Explain why metals are good conductors in the solid state but ionic compounds are not.
Solution
metal are generally good conductors due to the presence of free valence electrons which starts to move a potential difference or electric field is applied across the metal conductors , example copper , aluminium . whereas in ionic compounds the free valence electrons participate in ionic bonding and hence they cannot contribute towards conductivity , but when they are molten state they show some conductivity.
