Hookes law states that the force needed to stretch a spring

Hooke\'s law states that the force needed to stretch a spring is proportional to the amount the spring is stretched. If 10 lb stretches a certain spring 10 inches, how much will the spring be stretched by a force of 4 lb?

Solution

force = k*(spring displacement)

F =k*a

F2/F1 = a2/a1

a2 = (F2/F1)*a1 = (10/4)*10 = 100/4 = 25 inches
