Configuration Management is required to be in place to save time and resources and as a result cost. Consider the situation where the team members keeps on changing and there is no proper documentation in place then every time a new person comes needs to start from fresh to understand whats done till now and then he will work according to his perspective.This should have complete information about hardware and software used also what access are required for them.
And in order to have a nice and proper document in place one should involve appropriate software and hardware suppliers which could provide valuable input.Like when we consider hardware different systems and their different version are supported only with some specific hardware and software, same goes for any hardware component be it network devices(switches , routers), desktop computers. And hardware suppliers are the best people to provide information on this front like a particular device supports what and needs what to be configured(agree it doesnot come without cost but just one time investment). Similaly when we talk about software not every software and every version of it can work on any hardware and this information could be provided by software suppliers.
