igand Field Theory a Construct semiquantitative MO diagrams

igand Field Theory (a) Construct semi-quantitative MO diagrams (o-only) for XeF4, XeFs, and XeF (b) Which of these three compounds do you predict as the strongest fluorinating agent? Why? (c) Which of these do you predict as the most stable: XeFs+, XeFs, or XeFs (d) Fluoride compounds of helium and neon are unknown. Why? (10 pts) 6-

Solution

d) fluride compounds of He and Ne are unknown beacuse He and Ne are noble gases and their octate is completely filled so cant accept further electrons from Fluoride to form compounds.

c) In XeF5 (+) ,Xe has 8 valence electron. Each F gives 1 electron to form Xe-F bond. total number of electron = 13

also their is positive charge therefore total number of electron left= 12

IN XeF5 , TOTAL NUMBER OF ELECTRONS PARTICIPATED = 13 ,

XeF5(-), TOTAL NUMBER OF ELECTRONS PARTICIPATED = 14 (UNSTABLE STERIC FACTOR)

THEREFORE XeF5(+) more stable due to less number of electrons
