At a flea market, Joe bought some VCR tapes and CDs. The CDs sold for $5.00 each, and the VCR tapes sold for $2.00 each. If the total cost of the items was $66.00 and the total number of products sold was 18, find how many of each item Joe bought. Joe bought CDs and VCR tapes.

Solution

Let x be the number of CDs and y be the number of VCR tapes.

WE have, 5x + 2y = 66. cal this as equation 1.

Also, total number of products sold were 18 so we have,

x+y =18. cal this as equation 2.

Solving these 2 equations we get our answer.

Multiply equation 2 by 2 and subtract it from 1. we get:

3x = 30 implies x =10.

Susbtituting x=10 in equation 2 we get, y = 8.

Thus, Joe bought 10 CDs and 8 VCR tapes.

Hope this helps!

Thank you !
