There are different employee motivation theories that try to answer the question: what motivates the employees? Understanding what motivates them is necessary in order to improve their performance.

Every employee is different, this means you cannot expect to motivate all employees with the same thing, what is a good motivator for some can be have none use to others.

The management by objective theory describes that employees are motivated by goals and objectives, employees like to be considered when it comes to a strategic decisions.

At the end of the day a manager can think that only money motivates and employee, of course money is important but there has to be something else, maybe someone would motivate getting the same amount of money but with fix schedule so he can spend more time with his family or the company paying a course at the university.

The important thing here is to get to know your employees and learn what motivates them and never assume you can motivate everyone on the same way.
