1 How can you estimate DNA transcription and translation spe

1) How can you estimate DNA transcription and translation speeds for a human cell? You have to show your calculations and how you came up with the answer. (Basically just calculate DNA transcription and translation speeds for a human cell using the knowledge about the human DNA length, number of base pairs and so on. )

2) Why is DNA replication speed for a human cell different than for a bacterium (like E.Coli) ?

Solution

1) Rate of transcription in human cell is 1000 nucleotides/minute

If the DNA to be transcribed is of length 1.5kb (1500 nucleotides) then it would take 1.5 minutes.

Rate of translation is 140 amino acids/minute.

So for a mRNA of length 1500 nucleotides then it would result in 500 aminoacids.

140 aminoacids = 1 minute

500 aminoacids = ? minute

500/140 = approximately 3.57 or 3.6 minutes

2) Size of the cell and size of genome matters

Size of E.coli or bacterial cell is smaller than human cell and so is the size of the genome.

So replication in bacteria is faster than human cell.
