what is the difference between a recovery time objective and a recovery point objective in the context of a business continuity plan? Why is it important to define these two parameters early in the BC planning process?
Solution
Recovery Time Objective is the accepted time period before which the service has to be effective and running after a disaster. This metric is mentioned in the Business continuity plan and has to be measured from the first notification of a service failure.
Recovery Point Objective is the time interval that can be passed after service disruption before the data loss exceeds the agreed/acceptable level mentioned in a business continuity plan.
It is necessary to define these parameters before because when a business utilizes a cloud for its operations , it pays on usage basis to the cloud provider. But when there is an outage of the service due to a problem from the provider side , the business faces losses and depopularity in concern to its customers. Thus an agreement is needed n the form of a business continuity plan from the provider side that we will be able to continue the service within a particular time period and maximum of some data loss. If they are unable to continue the service after the mentioned deadlines in the BC plan they have to pay back for the business losses.
