y = 1.5 feet. (see figure). The diameter of the drum on the hoist is x = 8 inches. Find the number of degrees through which the drum must rotate. (Round to the nearest integer.)

Solution

In one revolution of the drum the hoist will raise up equal to the circumference of the drum.
Circumference of drum=2r=2(8/2)=2 * 4=8 inches
Hoist must be raised 1.5 ft = 1.5 *12 =18 inches
Number of revolutions the drum must turn=18/(8) = 9/(4)
Since Each revolution drum turns 360º
Therefore Drum will rotate 360*(9/4) = 257.831º = 258 degree
