Each of the shows that Boswell’s attends has a different booth rental fee. Booth rental fees can range from $350 to $5,000 for each show.

Assume that Boswell’s has an average contribution margin ratio of 40% on its products.

Assume that the booth rental fee at the Great Big Home + Garden Show is $4,200 for the ten-day show. How much in sales does Boswell’s need to break even on this show, assuming that the booth rental fee is the only fixed cost of the show?

The home and garden show runs for ten days. How much, on average, must Boswell’s sell each day of the show to break even?

Assume that 100,000 people visit the home and garden show each year spread evenly throughout the ten-day period. If 5% of the attendees purchase from Boswell’s at the show, how much must each customer purchase from Boswell’s for Boswell’s to break even on the booth rental fee?

Solution

1). Booth rental fee is to be considered as fixed cost because it does not changes due to changes in activity volumes. Variable cost is that cost which changes due to change in volumes hence this rental fee cannot be said as a variable cost.

2). If the rental fee at Great Big Home + Garden Show is $4200, then the break even sales are:
Breakeven sales = Fixed Cost / Contribution margin
= 4200/40% = $10,500 i.e breakeven sales

3). Breakeven sales per day = $10500 / 10 = $1,050 per day

4). If 5% out of 100000 people purchase from Boswell.
No. of buyers = 100000*5% = 5000
Cost of purchase by each buyer form Boswell\'s for Boswell\'s to breakeven = $10500 / 5000 = $2.1
