Please read chapters 1, 2, and 3 of Introduction to the New Mainframe: IBM z/VSE Basics (http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg247436.pdf) and answer the following questions:

1. List ways in which the mainframe of today challenges the traditional thinking about centralized computing versus distributed computing.

2. Explain how businesses make use of mainframe processing power, and how mainframe computing differs from other types of computing.

3. List three strengths of mainframe computing, and outline the major types of workloads for which mainframes are best suited.

4. Name five jobs or responsibilities that are related to mainframe computing.

5. This chapter mentioned at least five operating systems that are used on the mainframe. Choose three of them and describe the main characteristics of each.

Solution

1.A Main frame is a hub in corporation\'s data processing center , connection to users with small powerful equipments like workstations or terminals.existance of a mainframe givesa cenralised computing , as aganist to distributed form of computing. centralised data in a one mainframe respiratory rescues customers to handle updates single copy of business data.

2.main frame seated the desired position in business envoronment now_a_days especially in the areas such as banking,finance,health...etc .main frames offered the only tolerable means of managing the data processing needs depending on large and complex batch jobs like payroll and general processing.

mainframe computing is much reliable and security which is the major benefit.the server is solitary all the time.

3.strengths :1.Running the many applications with workload management .

2. power:mainframe is the extreme powerful computer found .

3.clearly described process and procedures are present.

there are two types of workload processing i.e batch processing which is able to process the terabytes of data n for high speed storage devices, where as the online transaction processing is influenced for low speed storage devices.

4].the five jobs which are relate to mainframe computing are

1.system programmer

2.system administrators

3.operators

4.application designers and programmers

5.analysis of productiuon control

5].mainframe operating systems are highly developed with (job scheduling) discrete charecteristics .

the types of operating systems are

1.z/os:it contains long run applications which updates in a database.especially for processing the huge, complicated workloads with important attribuites.

2.linux for z series: it manipulates with the ASCII charecter set only which is commonly utilized on mainframes.data sharing is not possible among linux and remaining mainframe operating systems.

3.z/TPF:a special purpose register system especially utilized by firms with huge volume of transactions like credit card firms.it utilizes multiple mainframes loosely coupled in nature.

4.Z/VM

5.V/SE
