Describe in a detailed explanation for the following:
a. Estimate the maximal number of generations a somatic cell might be capable of before potential loss of gene functions, if the cell had telomeres ranging in size from 5000bp to 20,000bp. Assume loss of 200 bp from atelomere during each generations and no telomerase activity.
b. Explain the activity and functions of the chromatin remodling complex in detail.
Solution
Each time cell devision takes place the telomere lenght shortens , so telomere lenght is directly associated with aging. as each time the telomere lenght shortens this may cause loss of gene and their function. this situation is prevented by a enzyme called telomerase. it is a ribonucleoprotein it adds species dependent telomere repeat sequence to the 3\' end of telomere.
in atelomerase activity after 50-70 generations the cell devision stops causing death.
viewing the above data the no of bp loss in every generation= 200.
so in5000-20,000bp long genome the no of generations after which gene function is lost = 20,000/200= 100 genarations. it is the maximum no of generations.
