16. Given the initial rate data for the reaction A + B ? C, determine the rate law for the reaction.
[A], M [B], M Rate = ?[C]/?t M/s
0.0460 0.220 1.31 x10-4
0.0920 0.220 5.24 x 10-4
0.0460 0.440 1.31 x 10-4

Solution
rate = k [A]^x[B]^y
putting first two data in above expression,
1. 1.31 x10-4=k[0.0460]^x [0.220]^y
2. 5.24 x 10-4=k[0.0920]^x [0.220]^y
-----------------------------------------------
dividing, 0.25 = [0.5]^x
=>1/4 = [1/2]^x=>x=2
similarly,
1. 1.31 x10-4=k[0.0460]^x [0.220]^y
3. 1.31 x 10-4=k[0.0460]^x [0.440]^y
-------------------------------------------------
dividing, 1= [1/2]^y
y=0

So the expression for rate law,
Rate = k [A]^2[B]^0
Rate = k[A]^2................................(Ans)
