Three capacitors with capacitance of 15 mu F and 25 mu F and 35 mu F are connected in parallel with an emf of 24.00 v.(a) What is the total energy stored in the Three capacitors? (b) If same system are connected in series find the total energy stored in the system?

Solution

here C1 = 15 uF = 15 x 10-6 F C2 = 25 uF = 25 x 10-6 F C3 = 35 uF = 35 x 10-6 F

(a) if they are connected in parallel then

C = C1 + C2 + C3

= 15 +25 + 35 = 75 x 10-6 F

then the energy stored E = CV2 / 2

= 0.5 x 75 x 10-6 x 24 x 24

= 0.0216 J Ans

(b) if they are connected in series then

1 / C = 1/C1 + 1/C2 + 1/C3

= 1/15 + 1/25 + 1/35

C = 7.394 uF = 7.394 x 10-6 F

so the energy stored E = CV2 / 2

= 0.5 x 7.394 x 10-6 x 24 x 24

= 0.00212 J Ans
