In the reaction between H2 gas and I2 gas formed hydrogen iodide gas(HI) by equation:
H2(g) In2(g) 2HI (g)
If we leave 15.0 g H2 react with 15.0 g I2 and we assume that the reaction goes completely to
HI product, which gas is the limiting reactant and what is the mass of the product HI
formed?
Solution
given 15g H2 reacts with 15g I2
moles of H2 = 15/2 = 7.5moles
moles of I2 = 15/253.8 =0.0591 moles
but by reaction H2 + I2 ------> 2HI
so 1 mole of H2 reacts with 1 mole of I2
so here limiting reagent is I2 as after its 0.0591 moles are consumed reaction stops.
