How are mitochondrial proteins translocated in to mitochondrial matrix?
Solution
Protein translocation across mitochondrial membrane is mediated by protein translocators:
TOM complex (outer membrane) ,TIM complex (inner membrane) and the OXA complex.
TOM complex first transports the mitochondrial transporting signal across the outer membrane. Then TIM complex bind the signal and opens the channel in the complex through which the polypeptide chain either enters the matrix or inserts into the inner membrane.
Mitochondrial protein import is fuelled by ATP hydrolysis and H+ gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane.
