DHS is many things to many entities and, in the final analysis, a clearinghouse as well as an operational center for policy on homeland safety and security. DHS minimally performs the following three tasks.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was created after sept 11 terrorist attacks. The primary responsibility of DHS is to ensure the safety and security of USA from terrorist activities and natural disasters. The three tasks that it performs are :

1) Federal preparation to counter and deal with terrorism and man-made disasters. Help local and state goverments protect important assets and key infrastructure such as buildings, dams, and power plants from terrorist attacks. Duties related to border security, emergency management and customs.

2) Security advisory system - Warn public safety officials and other government personnels about potential threats and dangers to their respective areas.

3) State and local fusion centers - allow local and state government officials enable law enforcement and terrorism intelligence system to warn about potential threats of terrorist attacks.
