Explain the difference between DR, BDR, and DROTHER. How would you go about changing the BDR to DR assuming all the routers are up and operational (nothing went down)? What would be the impact of such a change on a live or production network?

Solution

A DR is the router interface elected between all routers on a particular multiaccess network segment, generally supposed to be broadcast multiaccess. The DR creates and floods a Type 2 network LSA for that subnet. It also assists in the detailed process of database exchange over that subnet. Backup Designated Router play critical roles in preserving the amount of bandwidth being utilized in the network mesh. If the designated router fails or loses connectivity, the BDR assumes its role and a new BDR electron takes place between all the routers in the OSPF network. The BDR does not send out informs like the DR does. DROTHERS routers are all the non-DR/BDR routers in an OSPF network. To modify a BDR to DR, you have to give the BDR a higher priority than the current DR and it will configure to the DR then. There would be delays in a live network as the routers are reconfiguring.
